Every chess player has that one opening.
The one that makes your heart sink when it appears on the board. The one you hope your opponents never play against you, especially in high-stake games. It’s your opening nemesis.
As we flip the calendar to 2026, you face a choice. Do you keep banging your head against that same brick wall, or do you finally change the narrative?
January 1st is the universal “new chapter” day, making it the perfect moment for a strategic pivot. Whether you decide to avoid your opening nemesis entirely by switching to a fresh, unexplored repertoire, or you choose to face the beast head-on by finally mastering the theory to dismantle it, this is your reset button.
New Year, New Opening—that’s our motto as we help you turn your 2025 frustrations into your 2026 strengths.
The Great 1.e4 Debate – what is the preferred response?
Throughout December, we ran a series of polls on X/Twitter to find which response against 1.e4 is trending nowadays. We pitted the most popular defenses against each other in a tournament-style bracket.
The early rounds saw some classic collisions:
- The gritty French Defense outlasted the hypermodern Pirc/Modern.
- The Sicilian brushed aside the Scandinavian.
- The solid Caro-Kann shut down Owen’s Defense,
- And the classical 1…e5 held its ground against the provocative Alekhine’s Defense.
While the heavyweights dominated the early brackets, the semifinals served up a major upset.
Your author expected a “Clash of the Titans” final between the Sicilian and the traditional 1…e5. However, the Caro-Kann had other plans, eliminating 1…e5 in a move that signaled a shift in the community’s current tastes.
The grand final took place on December 25th, 2025. It was a stylistic showdown where both contestants pinned their hopes on the c-pawn, but with very different advances.
Ultimately the Sicilian, the weapon preferred by most elite players, prevailed over the Caro-Kann. As Chessable power user Maurits van der Meer put it: “Finally a proper matchup! But, of course, making a timid, small move with the c-pawn can’t be as good as confidently grabbing space and not allowing white to grab the center so easily 🤷”
